Mrs. Schmidt’s News 2/17/15

Field Trips: Tomorrow we will be visiting West Linn City Hall, (Wed. February 18th.)  It will be a very short field trip.  Bus will leave at 9:45 and we’ll be back at Willamette at about 11:15.  No need to pack a sack lunch because we’ll be back before lunch. This special visit is a great accompaniment to our community unit!

Next Thursday, 2/26, we will be taking the Portland Bridges field trip with Ms. McCormick’s class!  This is an all day field trip.  Please let me know if you child needs a sack lunch from school to take on the field trip.  This field trip will start us out with our new unit of study: Engineering.  If you are a confirmed chaperone, I will send you an email later this week with details.  It is very important that your child is not tardy this day.

Families and Communities: We are a little more than half way through with our social studies unit that focuses on learning about our family and the communities of our world.  During this unit, we have been learning about the members of our West-Linn community, how read and make maps, and our place in the world, as well as exploring the ancestry of your family.  We have created a community (city) in our classroom out of the empty cereal or cracker boxes you’ve sent in.  The kids named it “Schmidtlandia”. :)  I added a new link on our classroom blog, for students to read about different members of a community and their jobs.  Next week for homework I will ask students to visit the blog and comment on a community member they learned about.

Math: We have started a new Math Unit.  Please look for the blue paper that went home today explaining the new concepts.

Parent Conferences: I can’t believe parent conferences are schedule to take place in one month (3/17-19)!  Please mindful and keep those days open for upcoming scheduling.  There is a chance that I might start a day early, 3/16.  Information will be sent home in the upcoming weeks regarding when exactly the schedule sign-ups will be open.  This conference is a student led conference in which your child will share his/her learning and progress of the year thus far, as well as goals to continue to work on.

Thank you!  Enjoy the beautiful week!

Mrs. Schmidt’s News 2/2/15

Early Release: This Wednesday, 2/4.  School’s out at 12:10!

Valentine’s Day:  We will have our class friendship Valentine party on Friday 2/13.  The class list of children who celebrate Valentine’s Day is attached to today’s homework.  I can also send home valentine materials with the kids who want to make his/hers from scratch.  Let me know if your child would like some.  Please be sure that your child makes a valentine for all our friends in class on the list.  We will make valentine bags in class to hold our valentines for the day of.

Fun Run: Please send in your Fun Run pledges!  They are due this Friday, 2/6.

Read to Us Week: This week, a variety of community members are visiting our classroom and reading a story to us.  We had a reader today from the University of Oregon’s Admissions. Tomorrow we will have a cartographer from the city of West Linn talk to us about maps, and Thursday we will have an editor from the West Linn Tidings.  Ask your child about who comes to visit each day and what their favorite part was.

Homework: Please try your best to make sure your child reads to you or someone at least 20 minutes everyday!  It is part of the homework menu and I know life gets busy, but I can’t emphasize enough how important it is in his/her development.  I’ve noticed many students have turned in their homework without filling it out.  If reading home is a chore, I’d be happy to meet with you and your child to come up with inspiring ways to make it happen!

Have a lovely week!

Doing Our Best: We’ve seem to reach kind of a lull in our daily work habits.  Our morning meeting discussions will focus on how we know we are doing our best and it’s important to stay motivated and learn!  Please continue the conversation at home.  Some children have an inner drive to perform (intrinsic motivation), while others might need an extra reward incentive (extrinsic motivation).    We’ve needed extra reminders to stop and freeze when signaled, talk/use voices at appropriate times, and use our time wisely!  Thank you for your support in helping us do our best!

Fun Run: Thank you for your support with the Fun Run!  Please send in the pledges and donations for the Fun Run as soon as you have it all collected.  It is due February 6th.

Science Fair: February 25th from 8:00-11:00 in the gym for students and 6:00-7:00 at night for families.

Early Release: Next Wednesday 2/4/15

Read to Us Week: Next week we will have guests from around the community come to our class each day and read us a story.  The guests will also talk about the details of their profession and how their job helps the community.

Fun Run: Please join us this Friday for the Fun Run.  Our class is scheduled to run at 12:30.  You can run with us, or cheer us on from the sidelines.  Our goal this year is to raise $24,000.  Thank you for helping your child gather pledges! The top two classes that bring in the most money will receive a grant to spend for the classroom.  Your child’s pledge envelope is due February 6th.

Social Studies: We are starting a new social studies unit this week that focuses on families and communities!  We need your help to build our very own city in the classroom out of small boxes.  Please send in any empty used boxes; the size of a Kleenex box or smaller! We will use these boxes to make buildings in our make believe community.

Science Fair: The annual science fair will take place February 25th.  Registration forms are due this Friday, January 23rd!  I know many students took home a registration packet last week and are excited to investigate.  You can find more in the office if you need one!  This project is strictly and outside of school project, but I am more than happy to meet with your child to come up with experiment ideas.  I’ve encouraged everyone to give it a try!  Please read the registration packet carefully for rules and guidelines.

Homework: This week’s homework has a short story about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  in the back of the homework packet.  Please remind your student to tear the story and read it.  After it is read, I would like them to practice retelling to you, or another grown-up, the story with a strategy we’ve been working on in class: 5 Finger Retell (listed below).

Fun Run: Information regarding the Fun Run is located on the envelope you child brought home collect donations.  A quick reminder, our class is scheduled to run at 12:30 on Jan.23rd.  Please come and cheer us on or join us!  Our goal this year is to raise $24,000.  Thank you for helping your child gather pledges! The top two classes that bring in the most money will receive a grant to spend for the classroom.

Science/Social Studies: We have finished up our Water unit! Now we will focus on civil rights, what it means to be a citizen.

Reading: Reading strategies that we have been discussing as a class are: Making Inferences (using your background knowledge and clues from the text to make a prediction), and paying attention to punctuation.  Other strategies that many students are working on are: Flipping the sound (e.g. c can say “c” as in “can” and flip it to say “sss” as in “certain”), breaking up long words and chunking the sounds together, as well as backing up and rereading to check for meaning.  Ask your child to demonstrate some of these strategies to you while they are doing homework.  Practicing these strategies at home will strengthen your child’s reading.

Behavior Cards: Brand new behavior cards went home today!  Please make sure to review the marking/comments and sign it.  Your child can bring it back to school the next day or with homework on Fridays (whichever is easiest for you to get in a routine of doing).  Behavior cards go home on Mondays, reflecting the previous week.  Thank you for your teamwork!

Friday Journals: Friday Journal also went home today!  Please be sure to respond early in the week so they can write in it again on Friday.

Early Release this Wednesday, 1/14/15, school’s out at 12:10.

Martin Luther King Jr.: This month we will learn about MLK Jr. and the Civil Rights movement.  It’s a pretty powerful time to our room to learn and teach about citizenship and equality.
