Happy Spring Break!

I hope you are having a wonderful conference week!  It has been such a pleasure teaching and learning with your children and celebrating their growth!  I will certainly thinking about them when as they finish the year and work on their year end goals.  I can’t wait to come back and visit.  My planned last day is Friday, April 3rd.  I know Mrs. Fultcher will do a great job filling my shoes! :)

After Spring Break:  Some content areas we will be studying after spring break are: Engineer Bridge building out of popsicle sticks; opinion writing, and working with 3-digit numbers.

Willamette’s Food Drive Is Coming!

Please join us in helping to fight the hunger problem in Oregon! April 2nd-10th our school will be collecting nutritious canned food to be donated to The Oregon Food Bank. Our class goal this year is 125 cans! Our school goal is 3000! A percentage of the items we collect will be donated to our local food pantry right here in West Linn. As a way to encourage nutritional donations, each day there is a “Gold Star” item. If we donate the “Gold Star” item needed for that day, our class name will be announced over the intercom to recognize our effort. Just to clarify, we take any healthy food on any day of the drive. Gold Star donations just get our class name announced over the intercom the next morning. Here is the “Gold Star” schedule: April 2rd:canned meats (tuna, chicken, salmon, spam), April 3rd:soups, stews or chili with protein, April 7th:canned fruit and 100% fruit juice, April 8th:breakfast cereal (boxes of whole grain cereal, pancake/waffle mix), April 9th:peanut butter, April 10th:personal items (bar soap, shampoo, toothpaste and toilet paper.

Additional items needed: canned veggies, brown rice, whole grain pastas, beans (canned or dried), unsaturated cooking oil and shelf stable milk.

*Please check the expiration date on all food items*

Thank you for partnering with us!

Parent Conferences: I look forward to seeing you next week for your child’s conference!  Your child will lead you through the majority of this conference.   I will join about 20 minutes in… I try to wait until your child has gotten through most of the conference folder.  Your child is working hard to prepare the self-reflections and will be practicing hosting you!

If time is limited for you, remind your child to read all reflections, and save the reading of additional work for the end of the conference if time permits, or at home (the conference folder goes home, EXCEPT any unfinished writing)

You might want to ask your child these kinds of questions:

* What makes this your best work?

            * How did you get your idea for this?

            * What were you learning about when you made/did this?

            * What would you do differently if you did this again?

When finished, please remind your child to put all journals, notebooks and books back in his or her desk before you leave.  You child can take home all reflections and completed work in conference folder.

Early Release: Wednesday, 3/18.  School is out at 12:10.

Spring Break: No School the week of 3/23-27.  Back to school on March 31st

Parent Conferences: http://www2.wilps.wlwv.k12.or.us/SMStuff/

Please sign up on this link if you haven’t already done so! Your child is working hard and preparing his/her work to share with you.  He/She will lead the majority of this conference.   I will join about 20 minutes in… I try to wait until your child has gotten through most of the conference folder.  Your child has worked hard to prepare the self-reflections and work arranged at his or her table.  As time gets closer will be practicing presenting our work for you!  Please let the office know if you need help logging on to the PASS system or scheduling your conference.

Reading: We are beginning to dig deep into the 2nd grade reading standard that practices reading two versions of the same story and comparing and contrasting them.  For example there are many different “Cinderella” and “The 3 Little Pigs” books, which we may use.  Next week’s reading log will focus on this, so look for those kinds of books or let me know if you need to borrow a copy of something!

Early Release: Wednesday, 3/18.  School will be dismissed at 12:10.  Conferences will follow in the afternoon.

No School: Thursday and Friday the week of 3/19-20 due to conferences.

Spring Break: Wow!  I can’t believe it’s almost spring break!  No School the week of 3/23.  Back to school on March 30th

Field Trip and Bridges: We had a great field trip last week touring the different types of bridges in Portland.  We will continue our learning around bridges, engineering, and investigate how they solve a problem.  Our goal is to build our own bridge at the end of the unit out of popsicle sticks.  I will let you know when we’ll need parent volunteers for that project!

Have a great week!

Andrea

Mrs. Schmidt’s News 2/23/15

Field Trip: On Thursday, 2/26, we will be taking the field trip of Portland Bridges!  Please let me know if you child needs a sack lunch from school to take on the field trip.  This is an all day field trip and your child needs a snack and a lunch. We will leave Willamette at 8:00am, so it is very important that your child is not tardy this day.  We are scheduled to return at 2:00.

Parent Conferences: Student led parent conferences are scheduled the week of March 16th.  I will begin conferences on the 16th after school.  Your child has been working very hard and will show you first hand what he/she has been up to.  Your username and password for the conference PASS system will be emailed to you by the office.  Remember to use the correct login information for each child and corresponding teacher.  If you have any sign-up questions or need help, please contact the office!  You can register the morning of 2/25.  Thank you for making time to attend reserved times for conferences.

Maternity Leave: To keep you in the loop, I plan on going on leave April 6th.  Which means my last day “planned” day of teaching is April 3rd.  Hopefully, he doesn’t come early.  Mr. Pryor and I have found a wonderful, experienced, long-term substitute to fill my shoes when I go on leave.  To help make a smooth transition, we plan on having her visit the classroom and get to know the kids and routines.  I will have more information on our long-term sub in the future.  :-)

Thanks for signing up for conferences on Wednesday!  Have a wonderful week!

:-) Andrea
