Nuts & Bolts

A Message from Ms. McCormick

September 3, 2013

Dear Families,

Welcome back to school!  This will be such a wonderful year of growth and discovery for the children as they continue to develop their reading, writing, math, and friendship skills.  This year they will also deepen their awareness of history, geography and the physical and natural world. I can hardly wait to get started! Here are some things to keep in mind in the coming weeks:

Much of this week and next will be spent focused on community building.  As we get to know one another we will develop an atmosphere of trust, respect, and teamwork in our classroom; one in which each child feels like an honored community member and friend.  We will also be adjusting to new routines and establishing norms for maintaining a cheerful and harmonious learning community. In short- we’re going to be busy, busy, busy!  I look forward to speaking with you about the arc of our curriculum during Curriculum Night on Wednesday, September 18th at 6:30.  More details about that evening to come!

Regular homework will not begin until after Curriculum Night, but there is a good deal of correspondence that goes back and forth between school and home during the first few weeks of school. Please check your child’s backpack each day for important messages from me, the office, and the PTA, and promptly fill out and return all pertinent paperwork. Today for instance you’ll find a permission slip that allows your child to take class walks to the park and around the neighborhood. There’s also a “student profile” for you to tell me a bit more about your child. Please return these forms as soon as possible.  Thank you in advance for your diligence!

We have a short snack break each morning.  Please send a healthy snack (cheese, crackers, pretzels, veggies, fruit, granola, etc.) with your child.  We do have a water fountain in the classroom, but I suggest children bring a reusable water bottle to keep at school.  In accordance with our district-wide commitment to sustainability, I discourage the frequent use of disposable plastic water bottles.

Here are important times in your child’s daily schedule:

  • Arrival Children need to arrive at school no later than 7:50
  • First Recess 10:00-10:15
  • Second Recess 11:40
  • Lunch 12:00
  • Specials : Music– Mon. & Thurs at 12:30, Wellness- Wed. at 1:00, Thurs. at 12:30. Library– Friday 12:30
  • Dismissal 2:05
