    Are Animals Happy In Cages?

    By: Hannah Young

Imagine you were at a zoo and you saw an animal repeatedly bobbing his/her head up and down, or turning round, and round in never ending circles or even tearing holes in their own skin! What would you do? We need to save/help those animals! These animals are so depressed that they want to inflict harm an themselves. They rip holes in their own skin, would you ever do that? Can you imagine being so depressed that you would want to tear holes in your own skin? I think zoos are NOT good for animals. If you don’t agree with me then think about a Giraffe, who was playing in the wild then someone came along and shot it with sleeping drugs, and took it away. What would you do? Well that is what zoos do to some animals. But if we take zoos away that will not happen to any wild animals.

Most importantly, research shows that some animals live over 20 years longer when they are in the wild then when they live alone, being bored all day, with small spaces and no friends in the zoos. According to the Bar Graph, Asian elephants live 22 years longer in the wild than they do in zoos. 22 years is a long time, if you think about it. Also, African elephants live 40 years longer in the wild than they do in zoos. I think those elephants in the zoos probably died of confined spaces, distress, anger, or depression. These are just a couple of the things the disease Zoochosis does to animals. As you probably can tell animals live much, much longer when they can live in the wild and when they are with their families, who are just as important to the animals as our families are to us. Would you like living without a family, or any friends to play with? That is why it is so important for the animals to stay in their natural habitat, where they belong.

Another reason that I think is important is that, Animals are distressed in the zoos they live in. Trying to get out of their cages and stuff which is not too fun. Animals in zoos are missing their families, because they get taken away from their family, their natural habitat, and their friends. If you have been reading this article, you are probably wondering what Zoochosis is, it is a mental illness caused by zoos. It is because they have no family and they have confined spaces and they can not get as much exercise as they need. That is what Zoochosis is. As I said earlier about what it does to animals, it makes them grab and shake cage bars, bob heads up and down, turn in never-ending circles, and even tearing holes in their own skin. Imagine being a wild animal, you were playing in the trees and mud then you went to bed. When you woke up you found yourself in a small room with no trees at all. I do not know about you but I would miss my friends, mother, father, brothers, sisters and my natural habitat. I would have to live there for possibly the rest of your life. That is why, Zoochosis is a very large part of the reason animals are distressed in zoos twisting their necks, bobbing their heads and tearing holes in their own skin could cause injuries which is not good. It would be kind of hard to live while being distressed, mad, sad and as if that is not enough they miss their families and friends in their natural habitats.

Also, I think that aquatic animals are also distressed, sad and mad because they get placed in underwater tanks or Aquariums. I would not want to live in a tank or an aquarium where I would not be able to swim 100 miles everyday. I bet you’re glad that you are not an aquatic animal but what if you were a very large whale, imagine getting carried to your new ” home” a tank or an aquarium, it would uncomfortable to live at you new home, never seeing the sunlight and family and friends, but getting to your tank, or your new aquarium since you would be so large it would be so hard. According to the Zoochosis Article, there is a story about a killer whale named Junior. He was placed in an underwater tank in Niagra Falls. He died four years later he was deprived of outside air, sunlight, and companionship. No one should have to die like that. But he is not alone, many other aquatic or underwater animals have died just a couple years after being removed from their natural habitat and their family and friends. Also, they can not communicate with echolocation because of the people around them talking yelling, footsteps and the glass enclosures in their tanks. So they can not “talk” to other animals, like family or friends who got taken to the aquarium too. Some animals, such as whales and dolphins can not swim very far so they do not get all their exercise, because they are accustomed to swimming up to 100 miles a day. They can not do this in the confined spaces they live in, like aquariums and underwater tanks. I do not think I would want to spend the rest of my life in a tank, aquarium or a cage. Would you want to live like that?

Remember, even if zoos may be good for us, they are NOT good for animals. I hope you agree with that, after you have read all about how bad I think zoos are. Animals are just more happy when they are with their family, living a natural, healthy life and having enough room to exercise and live well.(which means they are not grabbing on to their cage bars.)You would not want to be locked up in a cage, tank in an aquarium, or an underwater tank, would you? If you like animals then read about them online, in articles,at school, or see them in nature. You don’t have to keep them in confined spaces, with animals nothing like their own family. Even if zoos say they are helping animals, I do NOT think they are. I think the only things zoos are doing to animals is making them depressed, angry, sad and tired of living in their small homes without any family to comfort them. Animals that live in the water do not like tanks, animals live way longer in the wild and also animals are distressed and sad in zoos. So zoos should stop giving animals Zoochosis, Zoochosis is not a very common word but it is a disease caused by confined spaces in zoos and missing their family and we need to stop it.

  2. Seth Sorensen says:

    Are zoos good for animals?

Isn’t it fun to go to the zoo? Well it definitely is not fun for the animals. In my opinion I think animals should roam free in the wild. This is why… African elephants live 37 more years in the wild than in a zoo! That’s a lot more than when they live in zoos. Here’s another reason… Imagine when you’re at a zoo and you see an animal that looks really really sad. That’s probably because zoos take animals away from their family so the animals get sad. Here are some more convincing reasons why zoos are not good for animals…

Animals live a lot more years in the wild than in a zoo, According to life span of female elephants in zoos and the wild, African elephants live 37 more years than in the zoo. So African elephants only live 19 years in the zoo! But African elephants that live in the wild live about 56 years. Also Asian elephants that live in zoos live about 18 years. But when Asian elephants live in the wild they live 40 years.

Zoos cause a bad sickness called Zochosis, According to the Zoochosis document, Zoos sometimes cause Zoochosis? What is that you ask? Zoochosis is a mental illness that is caused by zoos because if animals stay in zoos way to long they will get Zoochosis. Zoochosis makes animals walk in never ending circles, bob there head up and down, rip holes in there skin, twist there neck and also pace back and forth.
Zoos also make animals live in small cages so the animals bite the bars with their teeth and shake them. Also if they live in to small cages they won’t get their average exercise a day.

Animals get sad because zoos take animals away from their home, According to Zoochosis, Have you ever went to a zoo and saw an animal that didn’t look very happy? That’s probably because zoos take animals away from there family and home. Imagine if your mom or dad or brother or sister got taken away. Wouldn’t you be sad? Well animals have to go through that all the time. So that’s probably why they are sad.

And remember, zoos make animals die faster, make them live in small cages so they won’t get there average exercise a day, and make animals get Zochosis. Thanks so much for reading my report bye!

  3. Britta Beecham says:

    Zoos should go!

Keep animals in a Little space I don’t think so.Imagine sitting in a cramped cage all day seeing no friends and never be abel to go outside.
Imagine that people will see you eat, drink and sleep and sometimes they can keep you awake.sometimes the Zoo keepers might give you food you won’t like then you will starve unless you go thorough it. Zoos should go! Animals should stay in there natural habitat.

Animals like big spaces to run and play but they can’t do that if there cramped cage.
There’s a “mental illness” that’s called Zoochosis,if you are not born in the zoo then there is a big chance that you can get zoochosis,if you are born in the zoo you can not get zoochosis because you are used to be in a small cage. According to the zoochosis article if you get zoochosis there is a cause of “pacing back and forth, twisting there necks, bob their heads up and down,Pmturn in never ending circles, and even taring holes in there own skin.”sometimes they fight to get out of there cage by shaking the bars and trying to get out even they now they can’t.According to the zoochosis article another study found that elephants in “zoos spend 22 percent of there time engaging abnormal behavior, such as repeating head bobbing or bitting cage bars, and bears spend about 30 percent of there time pacing,a sing of distress”.According to the bar graph the life span of female Elephants in zoos and the wild.In zoos the elephants only lived about 16 years in the zoo,and in the wild they have lived up to about 54 years.

According to t he zoochosis article a Killer whale named junior after living in a very small tank not getting a lot of exercise he died four years latter of living in the zoo. Most Aquatic animals that live in the zoo they are separated from there family’s they cannot connect if there different types of animals. Animals like whales and Dolphins who are accustomed to swimming up to 100 miles in one day and diving hundreds of feet are forced to stay live in a confined space,do you think they can get that type of exercise in a water tank,i don’t think so.

Animals at zoos are missing things they are missing there natural habitat, family’s,missing friends and much more. For example in there natural habitat there missing there prey, and companies. They don’t have there families to take care of them , they just have to have people to take care of them, they probably don’t want a stranger taking care you that is totaled not there gender would you?I don’t think so.They don’t see there prey anymore because they were separated from there prey and that will be hard for his or her friends to just see you get taken away,i bet there fiends will really miss them.Just imagining your fiend getting taken away from you or you getting taken away from your friends and family that would be hard don’t you think i would. Be sacred to death if i was taken away from my family and friends and put in a cramped cage.Once i was at the zoo and i saw a Gorilla pulling at the cage bars and I felt really bad for it. although the main purpose is that zoos keep animals from getting extinct and having people see them cool animals like them i mean we’re els can you see cool animals like that it will be way ester if you just went to the zoo,but all you would see is animals being sad though.

Remember animals In zoos are not happy because people looking at you well your eating and bothering you well you maybe want some alone time.Don’t you ever want your brother or sister or sometimes your mom or your dad to stop bothering you or you want some alone time well that’s how animals feel every second the zoo is opened which is a lot of the time how would you feel in that situation tier I would never be abel to go to sleep with loud noise would you? With aquatic animals there water gets dirty with other animals stuff, have to deal with it over how many animals make the water every week, even with different types of animals.

  4. Daniel Haj says:

    There Should Be Zoos
    By: Daniel
Zoos are good because, A cording to th Fox News the Phoenix zoo helped oryx’s from getting extinct in the wild. The zoos take care of injured, and sick, and lost animals. Zoos also saved animals when elephants were over crowding Swaziland.

First of all, zoos save animals from getting extinct. According to the Fox News video the Phoenix Zoo helped about 9 oryx’s from getting extinct. Oryx’s kind of look like a mountain goat. Zoos gave elephants a home so that the black rhino does not get extinct. Back in the days there were to many elephants ruining land in the Mkyhaya and Hlane Game Reserves. Hlane Game Reserves is a place where people take care of animals. The reason why the Hlane Game Reserves took the elephants is because the elephants were taking bark off trees and nocking them down and birds that live in the the wild in the trees die. Birds and animals that live in trees would be extinct by now if it wasn’t for zoos.

Secondly, zoos save the injured, sick, lost animals in the wild. When I went to the Oregon zoo I saw someone helping a sick and injured animal from the wild. All the animals in the zoo had a problem ether they were lost, sick or injured. Zoos take animals from the wild for a reason, 1 they are sick or 2 they are ether injured or lost. A lost animal shakes, walk around everywhere and looks down with its head. A injured animal limps and walks like a turtle and falls down to the ground a lot. A sick animal would walk slow and can’t run.

Thirdly, elephants are over crowding Swaziland. Back in the day elephants were over crowding Swaziland. Animals were getting destroyed and elephants were filling up the place. So somebody had take the elephants some where. When the zoo heard that the elephants were taking over the place, the zoo took the elephants because, they thought that if they take the elephants there might be more people coming to the zoo. The zoo had to help animals in the wild from getting destroyed.

Remember, zoos are good because they help animals from getting extinct, and injured, sick, lost animals, and took the elephants from Swaziland because the elephants were over crowding.

  5. Tyler Coke says:

    Zoos should stay
    by Tyler
People think there shouldn’t be zoos but I think there should be zoos because, first of all with out zoos animals would be getting extinct. Animals would be losing their homes from elephants. The elephants would be tearing down trees! Secondly, zoos can give animals a home if they are lost or hurt. They also help heal the hurt animals. Thirdly, zoos give animals a home if their home is getting ruined or destroyed.

One reason, zoos help save animals that are about to be extinct because if their home is getting ruined or destroyed. According to the Fox News video the Phenix zoo took most of the Oryx’s from the world, which is only about 9 oryx’s. Then later on after 45 years they had 239 births. The oryx’s were not going to be extinct Because the Phenix zoo saved the oryx’s. There were about 6,000 Oryx’s in the world now. According to the Swaziland article elephants were taking over Swaziland. The “humans created the problem, so the humans have to fix it”. The black rhino home was getting destroyed. So the Mick and his father took eleven elephants from Swaziland to bring to the Santiago zoo so that the elephants won’t take over Swaziland.

Another reason, zoos can help animals that are lost or hurt. Also, when I went to the Oregon zoo I went to a place when they help turtles that are hurt or lost. The place can help heal the hurt animals and give them a home like where they live. Zoos give animals a home like where they were living. Animals have a problem like they are lost, injured, or their habit is destroyed.

Another reason, zoos can help animals if the animals home is ruined or destroyed. Zoos give animals a home when their habit is destroyed. They give them a habit just like home. According to the Fox News video the Phenix zoo gave the Oryx’s a place just like where they lived. When I went to the Oregon zoo they gave the animals a home like where they live. They can change the temperature in the water for the Penguins, otters, and polar bears. Also, the Oregon zoo gives snakes, owls and many different animals a place like home. Animals come from somewhere different and zoos make it just like home.

Remember, I want zoos to exist. Firstly, zoos can help animals not get extinct. Also remember, zoos also give a home for animals and give them a home just like where they lived. Lastly, the Oregon zoo and many zoos help heal the hurt animals or help them if they are lost.

  6. Teddy Skyler says:

    Zoos:
    The Place Animals Hate

    By: Theodore Skyler

Several people think that zoos are acceptable, but I’m not so sure. I think animals should live free and in the wild. Animals in captivity tear holes their own skin. Elephants live much longer in their natural habitat. Aquatic animals can’t communicate well in tanks. Do you want to know what’s the cause of all this? Zoos themselves.

When animals enter captivity, they develop a kind of illness called Zoochosis. Zoochosis is a mental disease that makes them do unnatural and supplementary movements, and even hurt themselves. According to the Zoochosis Article, these bizarre movements include pacing, bobbing their heads, turning in never ending circles, twisting their neck, and even tearing holes in their own skin. Can you imagine being so miserable that you would want to inflict pain on yourself? One study says that elephants in captivity spend 22% of their time bobbing heads or biting cage bars. Another study says that bears spend 30% of their time pacing, a sign of distress. In other words, Zoochosis is hideous, and zoos make it happen.

Animals live a lot longer in the wild, rather than in a zoo. According to the chart; Life Span Of Female Elephants In Zoos And The Wild, African elephants in the wild live about 55 years, which is about 38 more years than an African Elephant in a zoo. the Asian Elephants live quite similar lives. Asian Elephants in the wild live about 42 years, which is about 23 more years than an Asian Elephant in a zoo. According to the Zoochosis article, Junior, a orca, ( killer whale ) was removed from his natural habitat in Iceland, and placed in a tank in Niagara Falls. Deprived of outside air, sunlight, and companionship, he died four years later.

Speaking of aquatic animals, aquariums and tanks affect other creatures like Junior, too. According to the Zoochosis Article, animals like whales and dolphins, who are accustomed to swimming up to 100 miles in one day and diving hundreds of feet, are forced to live in confined spaces. Do you think they can get this type of exercise in a water tank? I don’t think so. As if that isn’t enough, aquatic animals have a special way of talking to each other and finding their prey. They use sound patterns, or echolocation. This natural process is sometimes non-existent in aquariums because of the noise level and the glass enclosures. This is unacceptable for any animal, any time, any place.

As you can see, zoos are bad. Zoos cause Zoochosis, animals live longer in the wild, and aquariums are bad for aquatic animals. Additionally, animals are separated from their families. Around the world, animal are taken from their homes and placed in an artificial habitat, and are forced to live with groups nothing like their own relatives. As I said earlier, a lot of people think zoos are great, but I don’t think so.

  7. Casen Grant says:

    Zoos should exist
    By: Casen
I think that zoos should exist because they are keeping the population of animals high and they take animals that have taken over an area. Also,
animals that are injured would be eaten or die in pain. We don’t want that do we? What if there were no zoos? Animals would be going extinct or hunters would kill them off. The number of animals in the world would be decreasing.

Zoos help increase the population of endangered species. According to the Fox News video. The oryx almost went extinct because they lost their home in the Middle East and in the Middle East they were being over hunted which means that they were hunted to much. The Phoenix zoo took in nine of the oryxes which was most of them. The Phoenix zoo made there habitat just like the Middle East. The oryxes had 239 births, in the zoo, in the past 45 years! The babies went back to the Middle East, and other zoos. Now there are more than 6,000 oryxes in the world!

Another reason why zoos are good, is because zoos take animals that have taken over an area. According to the Swazi Eleven article. The elephants took over the game reserve. The park was getting destroyed because the elephants were knocking down trees. Also, the elephants were tearing the bark off of the trees. The black rhino, one of Africa’s most endangered species had no food, because there were not many trees. Other species, such as birds couldn’t nest because there were not many trees. So, Mick the owner of the reserve decided to send seven elephants to the San Diego zoo and four to the Tampa zoo.

The last reason, also the most important reason is they care for injured or sick animals. Imagine, a bear eats a poison berry and gets sick from eating it. So, the zoo takes it in and they care for it until it is better. After that, the zoo sends it back to the wild. Another example is that the Oregon zoo took in a blind Eagle. They cared for it, but they couldn’t send it
the animal back into the wild if it is well enough.

Remember, that zoos take animals that have overpopulated. Also, zoos help animals that are about to go extinct. The most important idea is that zoos help animals that are sick or hurt.Clearly, zoos are good for animals and they should exist.

  8. Cooper Watkins says:

    Zoos are great

First of all zoos are great for lots of animals. If we did not have zoos many animals could have gone extinct. According to Fox Ten News, oryx were endangered because of hunting and loss of habitat. In the 1960s they took them in and they developed and now they are not endangered. According to the Swazi even 2003 there were elephants over populating the game reserves and the black rhino had no food because of the elephants and the zoos took the elephants in.

Second of all zoos help repopulate endangered species intel they can be released. According to the fox ten news, the oryx were endangered and there was only nine left. The zoos took them in and in 45 years there were 239 births. Now there are over 6,000 in the world there are a lot of happy oryx in the world.

Third of all zoos take animals that have to many animals in one place. According to the Swazi eleven, elephants were over populating the game reserves in Swazi land. They were tearing trees down and ruining the land also the black rhino one of Africa’s most endangered species needed the trees to eat. If this continued the rhino would go excited! This also made it so birds could not be able to nest in a safe place. The zoos took 11 in seven went to the San Diego zoo and four went to Tampa.

Remember when animals need help the zoos can take them in and help them intel they are ready to take care of themselves and survive in the wild.
Because we like zoos and animals need zoos.

  9. Katherine DeVall says:

    Zoos should not exist! By:Kate

Do you think animals like the zoo? Have you ever wondered why any wild animal would bob there head or turn in never ending circles or even tear holes in their skin? This is all because of zoos. also, it’s called Zoochosis. Meanwhile, wild animals live longer in the wild than in the zoo. I will show you how.

Elephants live longer in the wild then in the zoo. According to the life Span Of Female Elephants In Zoos and the wild chart, wild African elephant live 37 more years then in zoos so African elephants in zoos live about 18 years and in the wild, about 55 years. Wild Asian elephants live 34 years longer then in zoos. The Asian elephant in the wild live to about 43. Asian elephants in the zoos live about 19 years.

Imagine you’re a little baby monkey that loves to play and swing on trees all day. All of a sudden you’re shot with a weird lazier thing. you wake up in a small little cage. It looks blurry. all you see is colors. You’re in a tree that looks nothing like the tree you sleep in. how would you feel? I would feel so scared, lost, and so many other things. You are separated from your family, friend, brothers , and sisters. I would be terrified. Would you? This is called separation and zoos do that to animals. According to the Zoochosis article “animals are separated from their families and and are forced to live in groups that are nothing like their own families”.

Have you ever seen an aquatic animals in the zoo like star fish, whales, Dolphins,And fishes? you think they like there home in the zoos but they really don’t. Aquatic animals use something called echolocation to find prey. In zoos they can’t because how loud it is and the to little space.

Remember, I hope you are with me on I think all zoos should be tarred apart and use the equipment on some thing that will never be harmful to animals. If I haven’t read the Zoochosis article written by: Stephanie and Shauwn. I got all of my Elephant fact from: Life Span Of Female Elephants In Zoos And The Wild. I hope your convinced that Zoos should be crushed and will never ever take wild animals away from there habitat and and placed in a cage.

  10. Emily Brown says:

    Should zoos exist?
    By Emily

Do you sometimes see animals In zoos that looks depressed, pacing, and sometimes even scared? Zoos help make that happen. Zoos separate baby animals and put them in a “habitat” for no absolute reason! Aquatic animals can’t even find their food with zoos around. Would you like a happy, free animal, or a depressed, claustrophobic animal? Zoos are torment to animals.

If wild animals get put in captivity, they sometimes develop an unnatural mental illness called Zoochosis. If an animal gets Zoochosis, they bob their necks, pace back and fourth, go in circles, crank their necks, and even tear holes in their own skin. Because of zoos, animals die faster than ever. According to the Zoochosis article, Junior, a young Orca, was removed from his habitat in Iceland and put in a tank in Niagara Falls. “He died four years later, deprived of outside air, sunlight, and companionship.” Zoos cause this everywhere.

Imagine you are a young dolphin who loves playing with your brothers and sisters and E exercise. Then you feel a sharp needle in your stomach. You are growing dizzy. Your siblings start swimming away from you. You are being carried away from your family. You are sleeping. You wake up, scared and lost. People start cheering and clapping, making echolocation hard. You are in a very small tank. You are now with strangers who look nothing like your parents. How would you feel? This is what zoos do to animals, big and small.

What would you do if you where in a small, confined place?what would you do if you where an animal that loves to play with family? Remember, ZOOS ARE BAD FOR ANIMALS! (Depressed, very sad.) (claustrophobic, scared of small places)

  11. Marina Sullivan says:

Imagine a lion with no food or water in its habitat. I don’t want that to happen. Zoos can help. A zoo can take a lion in and help the lion by giving it water and food. Now the animal doesn’t have to suffer from starvation or thirst. Zoos saved the Oryxes from going extinct. Zoos even help animals if they have injuries and sicknesses. Do you want an animal to suffer from starvation and thirst? Do you want animals going extinct? Do you want an animal dying from sickness and bad injures? I know I don’t.

Zoos can help save animals going extinct. They rescuing them when they are at risk. According to the Fox News Video, Oryxes almost went extinct. They had lost their habitat and were over hunted. The Phoenix Zoo took in nine Oryxes. In the last forty-five years, there have been 239 births in the Phoenix Zoo. Some of the babies were put back into the Middle East. Others were sent to different zoos. Now there are more than 6,000 Oryxes in the world, thanks to the Phoenix Zoo. The National Zoo and the Giant Panda Conservative Fund did the same thing with the Pandas. Zoos can also help animals stay alive by feeding them if their habitat has no food that they can eat or water. Also, zoos help animals with injuries.

Also, speaking of animals with injuries, zoos will take the animal to the zoos hospital and give them medicine and help them if they have scrapes and infected injuries. Then if the injuries get worse or don’t get better, they will keep the animals in the zoo. If the animal stays in the zoo, the people who take care of the animals will take extra care of that animal. They will also make sure that the animal doesn’t get it infected.

Another reason zoos should stay, is because they can take animals away when they are over crowding and/or destroying their habitat. According to the Swazi Eleven, elephants were killing trees in the Mkhaya and Hlane Game Reserves. When the elephants eat they tear bark off trees and sometimes knock the trees onto the ground. “Animals like Eagles, owls, and vultures had no place to nest. In addition, the black rhino, one of Africa’s most endangered species, also needed the trees to eat.” Zoos take in those animals so that they don’t destroy and/or over crowding land.

Remember, zoos are good for animals because they save endangered species help animals who have injuries, and even take the animal away if they are over crowding and/or destroying habitats and land.

I think zoos are good because they can help repopulate animals that are going extinct and that are hungry.

Imagine… a habitat that was destroyed and animals are being extinct. For example, there was only 9 oryx left in the world. An oryx sort of looks like a goat Luckily they were taken to the San Diego Zoo. They had 239 births in the past 45 years. Later they took the babies back to the Middle East. Now there are over 6,000 oryx in the world because of Zoos.

I think zoos are good because if animals habitats are too crowded with people making houses they can take them to zoos. If there is no space animals could be shot. According to Swazi 11 there were to many elephants living in the Mkhaya and Hlane game reserves.
Eleven elephants were taken from their home a flown to San Diego and Tampa. The elephants destroyed so many trees the park was now only black dead trees and if the situation went on any lounger birds like vultures,Eagles and owls wouldn’t have any place to nest in addition the black rhino one of Africa’s most endangered species, if there we’re no trees he wouldn’t survive.

  13. Aidyn Reed says:

    Zoos Should exit
    By: Aidyn Reed

Firstly, I think that zoo should go. Secondly, animals live longer in the wild. Thirdly animals are happier in the wild to. Have you ever been to the zoo and seen animals acting different than they would in the wild? That means that animal has Zoochosis.

Animals live longer in the wild. According to the Life Span of Female Elephants bar graph, African elephants live for 18 years in the zoo. African elephants in the wild live for 58 years. African elephants live for 40 years longer in the wild than in zoos. Asian elephants in zoos live for 19 years. Asian elephants in the wild live for 41 years. Asian elephants live for 22 years longer in the wild than in zoos.

Animals get Zoochosis. Zoochosis is a mental sickness which causes animals to do unusual things such as pacing, twisting their necks, bobbing their heads, turning in circles, and tearing holes in their skin. Animals also, grab at the cage bars, and shake or bight them. According to the Zoochosis article “Junior a killer whale was taken from his natural habitat in Iceland, and placed in a tank in Niagara Falls. He died four years later, deprived of outside air, sunlight, and companionship.”

  14. Shuo Xu says:

Zoo ,the place where all animals hates
Is zoos good for animals? No way!

Imagine, animals staring out at you with their sad eyes while shaking the bars of their small cage. Would you be happy for them or are going to feel bad for them? Would you want to help the animals that were taken from their habitats just for some greedy zoo owners to make tons of money ? Zoos claim to be helping animals, but they are just making the animals sick and eventually die. In zoos , when they are not making enough money ,they’ll give the animal less food or things that are necessary for them .

In zoos ,the animal’s life is very short and sad.
According to scientists around the world and Life Span of Female Elephants in Zoos and the Wild article . Animals in captivity live a very short live compared to their live in the wild . Scientists around the world proofed that African elephants live bout 60 years in the wild ,but only 17-18 years in captivity. In addition , the Asian elephants live about 41 years in the wild and only 18 years in the wild. The scientists looked at 40 years of information from zoos ,about 800 elephants, they also looked at hundreds of elephants in the wild . For example ,Junior, a killer whale was captured from its habitat and was put into a tank in Niagara Falls. Sadly he died 4 years later ,lacking what he needed . In the wild ,killer whale live up to 80 years . It’ life is almost just as long as you ,what would you feel if you died when you are a toddler.

Another reason zoo are horrible for animals is that once they are capture and caged ,they could develop a mental illness called zoochosis . What it does to animals is this illness makes animals act abnormal and even drive them insane. According
To circuswatchwa.org ,Other things that shows distress is :
Tongue playing, Which is usually displayed by giraffes or camel

pacing , can be displayed by big cats
Circling ,displayed by bears and elephants
Neck twisting , displayed by giraffes ,lammas and monkeys.
Vomiting, displayed By Gorillas and chimpanzees
Coprophagia ( meaning ,go to this website audioenglish.org then type in Coprophagia) displayed by gorilla or chimpanzees.
    Rocking,displayed by chimpanzees.
Swaying ,displayed by bears and elephants
Head bobbing and weaving elephants-and Bears
Over-grooming ,displayed by parrots and bears
Hurting them self ,displayed by big cats ,primates and bears.
.zoochosis is caused by many reasons ,one of them is living in confined space .imagine you are a baby cheetah, taken from you beloved parents and siblings and placed in a small tank ,you can’t even run around much without hurting your self .another reasons is animals missed The things that they need .” Can you be so miserable that you will want to inflict harm to your self ” According to the zoochosis Article. The born free fountain proved that It is common in the world that animals get zoochosis. would you be happy if most animals live a sad and distressful live. If you want learn more about zoochsis ,you could fallow this website circuswatchwa.org after you got there ,go to expert say ,and scroll down into the section about zoochosis.

Animals around the world is captured and caged to be put ended into a confined cage. Imagine you are a Proud bat who love your parents ,then suddenly some Random Person just captures you, and force you into a tank where you are also forced to live with animals that is nothing like your family. Would be so sad and overwhelmed . Do you want to know a very sad thing , tons of animal who were put into a zoo died because lack of outside air ,which you never get because you are trapped in a small cage .sun light ,because you are trapped indoor or caged, and without sunlight You are lacking a large amout iof sunlight . Aquatic animals Usually dive down into the ocean for serval hundred feet and swim up to 100 miles. Do you think there is that much room in a zoo ? Serval zoos added together And hundreds of pool deep could not even Make a proper ,satisfying habitat for a whale or other Aquatic animals. Companionship, because Which I’ve already said ,you are forced to live with a a group nothing like you family. If you like aquatic animalsLike the cute little dolphins and giant interesting whales ,and even sharks, which science are studying them for a cure of cancer. ,then this Is going to be very sad and unfortunate News for you ,in zoos the tank is really tiny and there are tons of noises ,cause of that ,they can’t use a thing called echolocation, which is used to detect prey and communication. It’s a very necessary thing for the aquatic animals. If they keep catching Aquatic animals and placing them in tanks ,thenMost of them will die lots of them will die.

After you finish reading this essay ,I hope you understand that Zoos are very bad for animals and zoos shorten their life’s. Remember how much harm the zoo does to animals.

    Zoos should not exist
    By:Jay’da

Firstly, I think zoos should not exist. Animals get a illness called Zoochosis. It is a illness that makes the animals bob there heads, make them tear there own skin, and turn in never ending circles. That’s why I think zoos should go.

Secondly, animals live longer in the wild. According to the Life Span of Female Elephants bar graph, the African elephants in the zoos they live up to 18 years. The African elephants in the wild live up to 58 years. Asian elephants in the zoos live for 19 years and Asian elephants in the wild live for 41 years.

Thirdly, animals get Zoochosis. Animals get zoochosis from zoos. Zoochosis is a mental illness that makes them show a sigh of distress or they pace back, and fourth, bite the cage bars, and even put holes in there skin. I really would not like to stay in the zoo if I would hurt myself.

So remember, that animals get zoochosis. That makes them tear there own skin. That is not going to happen if zoos go. Don’t forget Asian elephants live for 41 years in the wild.

  16. Jacklyn Craven says:

Zoos are good for animals..zoos can re-populate animals going extinct. Zoos can care about animals who have injuries. Zoos can take animals away when they are over crowding and or distorting habitat. If there are animals in the zoo that is hurt they can give them medicine to make them feel better.

According to Fox News oryxes had nine of them in the world and now thousands of them are alive.

Zoos can help endangered animals by taking some of the same species in to zoos and breed more of there species.

Zoos can care about animals who have injuries. Have you ever gone to a zoo and saw a animal with a broken leg or arm and getting it fixed by the zoo? If the animals are sick or hurt the zoo can let the animals heel and give them medicine then send them back to the wild. They keep the animals from getting into fights if they get into fights but if the animals are in the wild nobody can stop them. When they are sick they give them medicine to make them feel better.

Animals can ruin land. Other animals can’t eat or nest. Animals can’t stay on island. Animals can ruin land. Other animals can’t eat or nest.

Remember zoos are good because zoos save animals!

  17. Ryan Stout says:

    Should Zoos Exist?

Do you like zoos? Well if you do, don’t read this. I think zoos just make animals sad, lonely and depressed. Just imagine being stuck in a cage with people looking at you all day. Doesn’t that feel depressing? According to the Zoochosis article “Elephants spend 22% of their time bobbing their heads and biting their cages.”According to the life span bar graph of female elephants. Elephants live more than ten years longer in the wild.” And Aquatic animals can’t even communicate. How would you like to live in a small cage with people looking at you all day every day? I bet you wouldn’t even last a day.

Something is wrong with animals at zoos called Zoochosis. According to a Zoochosis article. “Zoochosis is a mental illness that can cause bobbing heads up and down, twisting necks, turning in never ending circles even taring their own skin.” And zoos cause all of it! Zoos shouldn’t exist because of that. There making animals live in captivity.

Another reason why you should not like zoos is that animals are just sad in zoos. Why? Because research shows that animals in zoos live less than animals in the wild. According to the bar graph. African elephants live 56 years in the wild and only 16 years in the zoos. Also, Asian elephants live 41 years in the wild and only 19 years in the zoo.

Aquatic animals shouldn’t belong in zoos. The first reason, is that aquatic animals have a way of communicating with one another called echolocation. They also use echolocation to find prey and food. They can’t use that in their glass enclosure. What causes that? The glass enclosure makes sound waves from the people talking outside of the enclosure. According to the Zoochosis article “Junior a killer whale died after four years in captivity. “He’s not the only one though, aquariums around the world are place animals in aquariums these animals are forced to live in groups nothing like their own.”

Remember, animals in zoos are depressed and sad. You should not like zoos. Also, remember that aquatic animals can’t even communicate with one another. Do you like elephants? well remember they only live 16-19 years in the zoo. Would you want to inflict harm on yourself? Well remember zoos cause Zoochosis.

Do you think we should have zoos

Do you think we should have zoos? I don’t think so! When some animals are kept up in cages they can get a mental illness called Zoochosis. Some scientists looked at 40 years of information from zoos, about 800 elephants and the elephants lived longer in the wild! A killer whale named Junior was taken from his natural habitat in Iceland and placed in a water tank. I think zoos are bad.

When animals are kept in captivity they develop a mental illness called Zoochosis. According to the Zoochosis article When an animal has Zoochosis the animal will inflict harm on them self for example, “they will bob their head up and down, turn in never ending circles, pace back and forth or tare holes in there own skin”. When these animals have Zoochosis they die faster! Do you want that?

Animas live a longer life when they are in the wild. According to Life Span Of Female Elephants In Zoos And The Wild bar graph, when African elephants are in the zoo they live only for about 17 years but in the wild they live for about 56 years. When Asian elephants are in the zoo they live for about 19 years but they live for about 41 years in the wild. You can see that there life span in the wild is much longer then when there in the zoo.

Some animals don’t get all the things they need in zoos to survive. According to the Zoochosis article, “Junior a killer whale, was removed from his natural habitat in Iceland and placed in a tank by Niagara Falls”. He died four years later because he was missing some things he had in his natural habitat. Other aquatic animals are kept in a tank and are forced to live in groups with animals that aren’t at all like their family.

So remember that animals get zoochosis when there in zoos and their life span gets shorter to! What if you where an animal kept in cage separated from your family with know one you know. How would you feel? I would not like it at all, I would wonder where my family was.

    Zoo’s
    Should Not Exist!

Do you think zoos are great? I don’t think that zoos are great. Zoos have so many bad qualities about them. Some animals in zoo have an illness called zoochosis, also zoo can shorten animals lives, and take them from there home.

In zoo’s some animals have a illness called zoochosis. Zoochosis is an mental illness that makes animals do weird thing like “head bobbing, pacing back and forth, twisting their necks, shaking cage bars and even tearing holes in there own skin”.
“Imagine being so miserable that you would want to” harm yourself? Animals have been documented with zoochosis all over the world.
in the wild animals, like elephants live longer then they do in zoo’s. According to the chart, female African elephants live about 18 years in the zoo, but in wild they live about 55 years! That 37 more years. Same thing for female Asian elephants in zoos they live about 20 years but in the wild they live about 43 years that’s 23 more years. Also ” according to zoochosis another study found that elephants in zoos spend 22 percent of there time engaging in abnormal behaviors” like head bobbing and biting cage bars. Same thing for bears, they spend 30 percent of there time pacing. According to the zoochosis article “Junior, a killer whale” was took from his home in Iceland and placed in a tank in Niagara Falls. “Deprived of outside air, sunlight and companionship”. He died 4 years latter.

Aquatic animals like Junior also have a special way of taking and finding their pray called echolocation but because of the “noise level and confined spaces, this natural process is sometimes non-existent”. Also whales and dolphins are made to “swim up to 100 of miles in one day and dive hundreds of feet do you think they can get that type of exercise in a water tank”? I don’t think so.

Imagine, your a baby elephant playing with your sisters and brothers your having the best time ever all of a sudden your shot and you fall asleep. When you wake up your in this cage with no one you no and everything is scary. This is called separation. Separation is when an animal is took from his or her family. According to the zoochosis article ” animals are forced to live with a family nothing like there own.” If I was that animal I would not like my life, would

Although zoos say “that their main purpose is to help prevent animals from becoming extinct and to educate people about animals,” I still think that zoos are bad for animals.

  20. Joshua Forseth says:

Imagine, animals tearing off their own skin in zoos, shaking bars bobbing their heads up and down spinning in never ending circles. Is that what you want? Well I don’t! Zoos should not exist!

When animals are kept in captivity they develop a mental illness called Zoochosis. When an animal has Zoochosis, they will die faster and inflict harm on theirselves. According to the Zoochosis article “if you looked into an animals eyes in a zoo you would see sadness”.

All animals can live a longer and happier life in the wild than zoos. For example, According to the female elephant life span bar graph, elephants can live 39-40 years longer in the wild! And Asian elephants can live 18-20 years longer! Also, according to the Zoochosis article, junior a killer whale was happy as can be until a zoo took him and placed him in a aquarium. He died 4 years later cause of open air.

there are missing things in zoos like trees, family members and friends. Also, they do not have the same habitat as they used to at their home. They also do not have enough open space.

Remember, zoos should not exist because of, Zoochosis, missing things in zoos, and animals live longer in the wild.

  21. Reagan Glynn says:

    Zoos:
    The Place For Animals
    By Reagan
Zoos are excellent for animals! Just imagine this, there was a habitat it was being destroyed. A zoo can help by taking animals in, so they don’t die. Here is a list of reasons zoos would need to take animals in: firstly, the animal could have hurt itself, secondly, they lost there home, thirdly, they have no food. Sometimes zoos take animals in, when they get hurt, and then, they might have a longer life. Zoos help animals, that need help.

Zoos can help animals from being extinct, for example, according to Fox News video, the oryxes almost went extinct, (there was about 9 of them In the world) however then in 1960 the Phenix zoo took 9 of them in. They had a good habit It was just like there real home, nice and dry, and they had good food to eat. So with really good care “in 45 years, there were 239 births!” Also a lot of the Oryx baby’s went to there home, or other zoos.

Zoos take the animals if it is to crowded. The zoos take the animals because they might not have enough space to live. This could happen for many reasons. Firstly, Some one could have build a house on the habitat, secondly, they could have cut down trees to make paper, and there’s lots of more reasons then that. people just take too much room. According to Swazi eleven article, there were to many elephants and they were tarring bark off a trees to eat, and they that made Black Rhino go extinct, firstly, there were to many and . people are thinking zoos are bad for animals, it’s really there fait. It’s there chose to keep the animal in the wild, and some people ( zoos) are nice to take care of the animals to keep them living. If there is too many of a certain animal then it might have to be shot with a gun because there are to many of them, so a zoo can take some in. Even though it might live longer in the wild, if there habitat is destroy they probably will have a longer life in a zoo.

Finally, remember zoos can save animals if there are endangered. Now there are over 6,000 oryxes in the world now! Zoos can help animals not to be dead, because if there are to many in one spot, some one could shot them with a gun and lots of them could die. If they shot a mom animal, the kid animal could die if they don’t have help to live because, firstly, they need protection, secondly, they need help to getting food, thirdly, they need love. A zoo has all of thees things especially love!

Zoos must stay because they can help endangered animals like

Zoos can help save endangered species of animals so they can repopulate to make more animals. According to Fox News there’s now more than 6,000 oryxes in the whole wide world and there used to be 9. Wait there’s more!! According to Fox News 45 years ago there were 239 births at the Phoenix zoo and last but not least according to Fox News the Oryxes are now happy Jordan oryxes.

According to the Swazi Eleven article, there where too many elephants in Swaziland. Some places actually killed the elephants to keep the population low. Thats were zoos come in. You see zoos can take overpopulated animals. I mean if there no zoos the elephants would have destroyed the game reserve.

    Zoos be gone
    By:Jackson DeShaw
So many people think zoos are good… But I’m one of the people that don’t. Imagine that you are at the zoo and you see the monkey hitting the bars trying to get out. then, you move on and you go to the tigers, you see the sadness in its eyes. That’s why we want animals to get out of zoos and be free to help them get the happiness they had before in the wild.

One reason that I think zoos are bad is because it makes the animals go crazy, according to the paper Zoochosis, in zoos, Animals go crazy or get a mental illness called Zoochosis. That illness, causes pacing back and fourth, turning in never ending circles miserably, bobbing there heads up and down, twisting there necks, and some animals even put holes in there skin! Also, according to the zoochosis article that elephants in zoos spend 22% doing abnormal behavior such as repeated head bobbing, or biting cage bars, and bears spend 30% of their time pacing, a sign of distress animals are not used to having enclosed spaces. They are used to being free and in the wild and zoos just make them uncomfortable.

A few years ago, a baby whale named junior lived in Iceland but then zoos took him away he was separated from his habitat and was put in a tank In Niagara falls without his family. He died 4 years later because of too little sunlight and outside air. Also, aquatic animals swim up to 100 miles in one day but whales can’t do that in zoos because they are crammed into a craned up small, small tank. Also, I think zoos are bad because zoos take animals and put them in a enclosure with disgusting dirty, dirty water or land and a few years later it dies, so if zoos bring in a new animal get ready for it to be in and out of the zoo in a flash
Finally, zoos are not good because they make elephants live shorter, according to the elephant age chart, some scientists discovered that the lifespan difference of a wild African elephant and a African elephant in the zoo is a 37 year difference! The wild elephant would live three times longer in the wild then if it was in a zoo that is another exact reason that zoos should not exist

So remember, if you were going to the zoo, You wouldn’t of noticed how sad animals are in zoos before, but now… if you go to the zoo, look closely and you will see the real sadness in their eyes. they shouldn’t be like that, they should be free and in the wild that’s the way it should be right now, and that’s the way it should stay because when they are in the wild they are not just happy, they’re free.

If you want to know more about how zoos are bad for animals, look up zoochosis or wild elephants and zoo elephants lifespan.

  24. Jack Winjum says:

    By: Jack.w zoos are great
Zoos are great for animals. For one, they save endangered species. Don’t you like having tigers around? Zoos have been saving endangered species for a long time. Secondly, they save lost or hurt animals from the wild. This makes animals live longer plus they send the animals back when ready to live back in the wild. Not to mention, zoos take animals that overpopulate their habitat. Zoos are here to stay, and it’s a good thing to!!

First of all, zoos save endangered animal species from going completely extinct. This includes animals like the tiger and the oryx. These two animals have both been nearly extinct but saved by zoos. These are also not the only animals saved from being gone, there are tons of other animals saved by zoos. But back to the oryx. According to Fox News, the oryx were close to becoming extinct before saved by the Arizona phenix zoo in the 1960s. the same thing happened with tigers in the San Diego zoo when I visited back in the 2000s. These animals have a scarce population because of poachers, predators, and us humans taking their space. Zoos make room so animals don’t go extinct. So thank you zoos for keeping a lot of animals from going extinct!

Secondly, zoos can take in animals without enough space to live. According to the Swazi Eleven article Swaziland’s game reserves are over run with elephants. This is a very bad thing. Having to many elephants or any animal is a bad thing. Other animals lose space. Other animals also loose a lot of food and ultimately die. I don’t know about you but I don’t want earths creatures to die. That’s where zoos come in. Zoos can take animals in and give them a lot of space to roam around and be as happily happy as possible.

Last of all, zoos can take in injured animals and let them go back when they have recovered from the injury or learned to live with it. For example, I found out by watching animal planet that by the beach where lots of birds live turtles are born. A ton of them get killed each year before they can even get to the ocean. So zoos come in and take them. The zoo gives the animals food and when their big enough they can go back to the wild, free from harm. Also, if they can they will perform surgery to help if needed, because they have more then enough money to take care of the animals. If they were in the wild they would probably die because they can’t just have an animal like a panda just perform surgery on a squirrel. That would just be plain weird so it is very good that zoos exist.

I think that zoos are good. they make animals happy and humans happy. Also remember, zoos can help injured animals, save animals with habitat lose, and prevent extinction to endangered animals.

  25. Eric Heinrich says:

Zoos are not good for animals

I think that zoos are bad for animals because animals can get Zoochosis.

Animals can go mad in zoos when Animals get Zoochosis. What Is zoochosis , you may ask? Its a mental illness that when animals are away from home to long they will get It. When animals get Zoochosis they offinle crake there neck and tar holes in there skin.

Animals live longer in the wild.
The life span of a female African elephant in the wild is 58 years. In the zoo It is 18 years and the life of a Asian elephant in the wild is 42 years and in the zoo it is only 19 years.

    Zoos:
    The Place Animals Hate

    By: Cole
    By:Cole
A lot of people think that zoos are great, but I’m not so sure. I think animals should live free in the wild. One of the reasons why I think animals should live in the wild is because they will develop a mental illness known as Zoochosis. Another reason why zoos are bad is that animals live longer in the wild. A third reason is aquariums are bad for aquatic animals. For more information, read the passage.

When animals are in captivity, they develop a mental illness which is called Zoochosis. Animals with the disease may pace back and forth, twist their necks, bob their heads up and down, turn in never ending circles, and even tear holes in their own skin. Zoochosis also causes, elephants to spend 22% of there time chewing on cage bars, and bears spend 30% of their time pacing, which is a sign of distress.

Animals live longer in the wild then in the zoos. There is documented research that female African Elephants in their natural habitat live 38 years longer than in zoos. Asian Elephants live 42 years longer in the wild than in zoos. Junior, a killer whale, was taken from his natural habitat in Iceland, to a aquarium in Niagara Falls. He died 4 years later because he was deprived of certain things he would of been able to do in the wild.

Aquatic animals in aquariums have been separated from their families.Animals like, whales, and dolphins can swim 100 miles in the wild. Do you think animals can get that kind of exercise in a tank? Also, aquatic animals have a special way of talking, called echolocation. Echolocation is when something makes a noise and it bounces off of something else in order to hit an animal. They can do that to find there prey or to find a friend. Sometimes, in aquariums, they can’t do that.

Remember, zoos are not helping animals, they’re making animals crazy. They give them a decease, they’ll have a shorter life, and they won’t be able to do things that they can do in the wild.
